The Chickens

My chicken series started as a project for a college course in 2020. My water-based media instructor assigned us to create a series of small works to trade with classmates. I'd drawn chickens twice before and felt like doing it again, so I decided that would be the theme for my series.

I visited my grandparents' house, a mile from my own, and took some photos of their backyard flock to paint from. They'd always had a variety of chicken breeds, a dozen or so birds at any given time. That must be why I was so drawn to chickens: they're a nostalgic symbol of my family. Plus they have an interesting shape to paint, come in so many colors, and nearly everyone has their own connection to the chicken.

Anyway, I painted the chickens and then painted some more, and kept my favorites. And then I kept painting them. Eventually, I started a Patreon page where I painted a chicken a month to send out as cards. This ran for over 3.5 years before I placed it on hiatus in 2026 to focus on other projects. As a result, I now have dozens of chicken paintings and a reputation as a chicken person!
